POA signed and delivered
May 2007
We signed POA (Power of Attorney) on Monday, May 7th at our adoption agency. We then had to have it certified down at the capitol building in Lincoln, about an hour away from Omaha. We knew that it would save us about 7-10 days if we drove down to Lincoln to have it certified instead of having it mailed. Who knows how long it would sit on someone's desk before they decide to take a look at it and certify it. When something is certified, what they are doing is checking if the notary who had stamped it is in good standing. So they look up the notary's name on the computer to check their status and then they attach a seal to the paper that is being certified with the Secretary of State's signature on it. I decided to drive down to Lincoln to get the POA certified on Tuesday, May 8th. The whole "visit" at the capitol took about 10 minutes. My trip took about 2 1/2 hours total, round trip.
The next day I took the certified POA to our agency to have it sent to Denver to have it authenticated. This means that they are checking to see if the Secretary of State's signature & seal are "legal/official". The certified POA was sent to Denver on May 8th,was returned pretty quickly and sent to Guatemala on Wednesday, May 16th.
